CEN/TC 256负责欧盟铁路运输业相关的机械产品的欧洲标准的制定,其目的是实现欧盟各成员国之间货物、服务和人员的自由运输。为实现该目标,欧盟发布了2项关于高速列车和普通列车互用性的指令96/48/EEC和2001/16/EEC,制定该指令实施的协调标准是CEN/TC 256的一项重要工作。
